"The Village" Goes Dark - Join the Chorus to Restore it to the Airwaves

January 17, 2012

I know I am not telling you anything new that radio is not what it used to be. For the last few years, my friend Mary Sue Twohy has programmed channel 15 "The Village" first on XM Satellite Radio, then continuing when it got bought up by Sirius and became the only satellite radio option. It is one of the few stations dedicated to broadcasting folk music, and the only fulltime channel on satellite. Like hundreds of artists, I have earned many hundreds of dollars in royalties from airplay on The Village, and have been heard by many thousands of listeners who might not have otherwise ever heard my my music. The decision to remove it was sudden, and seemingly arbitrary.

You could lend your voice, and help a LOT of recording artists and songwriters, simply by growing this petition as quickly as possible, at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/restore-a-dedicated-folk-music-progr.... It'll take about 20 seconds, and I will be among the many who are mighty grateful. Even if you are not a subscriber but simply like my music, or folk, or Americana music, your voice could help. While the decisions at Sirius are made by corporate accounting types who've already decided what is profitable and what isn't, the folk community really does need to stand up, be heard and maybe above all, be counted. A few thousand signatures might be enough to convince Sirius that there is indeed value in serving this minority community, much like the many different specialty channels they broadcast. I sure hope you are willing - thank you! And please, encourage others to add their voice.

Mary Sue does have a Facebook page for The Village if you'd like to add more commentary than just signing the petition.
